Pricing Art
Where to Begin
Starting out, pricing my art was the most difficult part for me. I agonized for a while over pricing and every artist and art form is different. Originally, I only offered one standard size of 11x17in prints. I figured they were the same size as a concert poster, which I would gladly pay $20 for at a show. So, $20 it was. I was fine with that.
Then, family and friends encouraged me to raise my prices. Again, I agonized over how. I got the idea of raising it in $5 increments over the next few months and see what my customers' reactions were. No one yelled at me. No one was angry with me. People gladly paid $25, then $30 all the way up to what I charge today.
Art is a HUman Right
I stopped raising the price where I felt a tad uncomfortable, then started offering other sizes at less and more expensive prices. This gave my customers a comfortable zone to choose from: do they want to spend $3 on a sticker or $1500 on a large, framed original?
I truly believe my art is for everyone and I want to make everyone feel like they can have a piece of it. Art is a human right and I want to be in galleries and museums as well as on a kids sticker covered water bottle.
